Habitat for Humanity: give what they can use, not what you can spare

Construction partner and in-kind donor to Habitat for Humanity chapters in Santa Barbara, Orange County and Los Angeles; the work ran through Tellus Design and Build; February 2007 to November 2016

IndustryNonprofit housing
Project typeCorporate giving program design
DatesFebruary 2007 to November 2016
SeatConstruction partner
EntityTellus Design and Build

Nobody hired us. Tellus chose Habitat for Humanity as the firm's community partner and gave it material, bid work, labor and consulting for nine years.

The chapters built homes on donated material and donated skilled labor, each with a yard, a sorting bench and a plan set that every donation had to fit.

Problem

A donor who asked what the chapter could use that season, not one who kept delivering what the firm could spare.

What we did

Treat material as a stock and labor, bid work and consulting as flows. When a chapter kept declining material, stop offering it there and give the flows instead.

Result

The relationship held from February 2007 to November 2016 across Santa Barbara, Orange County and Los Angeles, and the rule it produced is the reusable part.

When the people you are helping decline twice, you are giving them the wrong thing.Jesse Fowler
